First shut off the water at the angle valve. Prise off the cap on the lever, undo the screw beneath it and lift the lever away. Loosen the nut holding the cartridge with a spanner and remove the old cartridge. Seat the new one so it sits on the lugs in its housing, tighten the nut and refit the parts in reverse order. The cartridge diameter must match the old one.

The number is the cartridge body diameter in millimetres. ø35 has a slimmer body and is generally used in basin mixers; ø40 is thicker and used in sink and bath mixers. They are not interchangeable. When buying a spare you need to know your mixer's cartridge diameter; if you do not, remove the old cartridge and measure it.

An infrared sensor at the spout detects a hand in front of it and opens an internal solenoid valve, letting the water run. When the hand is withdrawn the valve closes. It runs on mains power or batteries. Because no contact is needed it is preferred in hospital, school, shopping centre and restaurant washrooms for hygiene, and it markedly reduces water consumption.

The most common cause is the aerator at the spout clogging with limescale and sediment. Unscrew the aerator by hand or with the proper key, soak its mesh in vinegar solution, brush it clean and screw it back without inverting it. If the problem persists, check that the angle valve is fully open and that the inlet filters are not blocked.

A wall-mounted mixer connects directly to two pipes coming out of the wall and its body stays exposed. In a concealed mixer the body is buried in the wall and only the control lever and spout are visible. A deck-mounted mixer passes through a hole in the basin or worktop and is tightened from below. The choice depends on the existing plumbing and the look you want.

Because vessel basins sit on top of the counter, a standard basin mixer is too short. These basins take raised-body models known as vessel basin mixers. When choosing, mind the basin height: the spout must clear the rim of the bowl by enough to stop water splashing.

Chrome, gold and nickel finishes should be wiped with a soft cloth and warm soapy water. Drying afterwards prevents limescale marks. Scouring pads, abrasive powders and strong cleaners containing acid or chlorine permanently scratch and dull the finish, so avoid them.
